CRICKET SEASON OPENING
Programme For To-day
A start will be ihade with the 193-1-35 cricket season this afternoon, when grade championship competitions will cominence. The Wellington CricketjAssociation will stage two senior matches at the Basin Reserve, iyhere some attractive play should be seen. • Wellington College Old Boys will play University on No. 1 wicket, and Midland will ' Oppose ■Wellington on No. 2 picket. ■ The fine weather this week has given players a chance to get-in some net practice, and, as wickets should, be firm and true, some good scoring should be recorded. Players will be on their mettle to earn places in the Wellington tegm to meet Auckland and Otago here at Christmas time, and Canterbury at ChrfStchijrch at the New Year. Steps have been taken to keep spectators well posted with the progress of both matches. Play will start at 2 p.m.
The Wellington Mercantile Cricket League will also set its grade championship matches going this afternoon. The league has shown enterprise in securing Athletic Park as its principal playing field, and three A grade matches will be played there this afternoon, Sargoods meetings Nivens. Cowans opposing Customs, and Smith and Smith trying conclusions with Roseneath. Two B grade teams will also piny on Athletic Park this nfteriiOon-—Woolworths v. Taxes A. As league games are confined to one afternoon’s play, (ho cricket has to he bright to reai’h final!fy. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.. p«tron of the Mercantile Cricket League, will, declarg .the season opened. A small charge will be made for admission to Athletic Park. Play will commence at 2.15 p.m.
