Prime Minister’s Seat THE LABOUR CANDIDATE Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, October 14. It is almost certain that Dr. Frank Birkinshaw, of Amberley, will be the Labour candidate to oppose the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, for the Hurunul seat. Dr. Birkinshaw has been approached and has consented to stand, but he has yet to be approved by the Labour Party. It is stated, however, that there is little or no doubt that Dr. Birkinshaw will be selected, and will stand. Dr. Birkinshaw was a member of the Labour Party in England while still a university student. He was on active service in France at the age of 16. and later served with the Royal Air Force in Arabia. He also spent some months with the French Foreign Legion in Arabia. He holds the coveted Medaille D’Honneur Avec Glaives En Bronze. He came to New Zealand in 1930. Dr. Birkinshaw is a successful writer of short stories and articles for New Zealand and overseas newspapers and magazines. His sister, Miss Mary Birkinshaw, is a wellknown supporter of the Labour movement in London. She is a lecturer at the London School of Economics. The decision of the Labour Party to contest the seat brings the number of candidates for the seat up to four — Mr. Forbes, Dr. Birkinshaw. Mr. D. C. Davie, prominent in the Douglas social credit movement, and Mr. G. S. Hamilton. a farmer, of Kaikoura. who describes himself as a Liberal.
