THE RACING WORLD

EXIT RAPIER u j Death of Noted Horse >' r , NOTES AND COMMENTS Gagoola’s Victor Bought for . i New Zealand .xi • " " /. ■ t : (By ‘‘Tlie Watcher.”)., Rapier died ou Tuesday ou the property of his breeder and owner, Mr. G., G. Holmes, Tai Tapu. Pie appeared in the best of health this season, but a postmortem revealed a ruptured, heart. Foaled jn. 1921, Rapier was only a young horse as stallions go, but apparently a strenuous racing career left its effects. He 'was easily the best horse sired by Gteyspear, a son of the Carbine horse Spearmint, and he combined unusual sprinting ability with stamina, thus reaching first-clasd rank. He held the distinction of being the only horse to win Zealand’s three big cups, the New Zealand Cup. Auckland Cup, and 'Wellington Cup, in the same season. In addition, he won the Trenthaiu Gold Cup, 'Awapuni Cup (Nightmarch second on each occasion), Parliamentary Handicap, and numerous other events. He won from j six furlongs up to two miles, and secured nearly £15,000 in stakes. Rapier’s dam, I Ahitea, was by St. Ambrose from Stepka, | by St. Leger from Stepfeldt, by Nordenfeldt from Steppe, the dam, of Stepniak. A host of good horses belong to this family, and, in addition to being first class as a racehorse, Rapier was well fitted by pedigree as a sire. He is represented by some promising young stodk at Riccarton and 30 mares were booked to him this season. Throughout, his career Rapier carried the colours of his breeder and was trained at Riccarton by ,11. Nurse.

She Beat Gagoola. / Stephanite, who is cabled as having been purchased in Melbourne for the stud in New Zealand by the Trentham trainer, J. McLaughlin, who was no doubt acting as an agent, is a bay mare b’red in Ireland ip 11)27 by Silvern from Compromise, by White Eagle from Jean’s Folly, by Ayrshire from Black Cherry, by Bendigo. She was imported to Victoria by Mr. E. M. Pearce as a yearling. She had her, first, race as a four-year-old and that race is remarkable for the fact that fllie not only won, but the runner-up Was the famous .'Gagoola (ex - Simba). who was the medium of a sensational, plunge that led to much official, inquiries. She did not race again that season and as five-year-old she’started twice without success. She has thus had only three racefl. and. if she is sound in all respects, she should be an ideal stud mare.

Two-year-olds at Napier. The nominations received -for the Prince of Wales Stakes (two-year-olds), to be run at the Napier, Park spring meeting next week, are the best for many years. Of this number only r ,Shu. (Hunting Song—Hathor) and Round Up (Lord Quex-Nukerakau) have raced. Happy' 'Landing is a brown colt, bred and owned by Mix J. .S.. McLeod. , president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, and is. by Seigfried from Tressida. This youngster, is the first of Siegfried’s stock to sport silk," therefore his appearance will be watched with interest,, especially as he is related to some, good gpllppers. The same owner has also entered his Chief Ruler—-Fair Rosamond Colt, 11 Dtice. Mr. C. E. Twist has entered one of his youngsters in Small Boy, the fullbrother to Cullus. Mr. F. Ormond has a Icouple engaged, Misurina and Oberbach.; Misurina, is a bay colt by Arausio from Royal Line ■ (Lackham —Hymarty), therefore a full-brother to Arauline. . He has already shown spaed in his trials, and is sure to be one to attract attention on the day. Oberbach is by xVrausio from Vigilance (Lord Quex —Watchful), and is a first foal. Blue Garter and Mona Lisa are the two fillies from Hastings that are showing promise. Mona Lisa is by Captain Bunsby— Phroso, and is an inmate of J. M. Cameron’s stable, while Blue Garter is by Garter Blue from the Kilboy—Jenee mare Putarino.

The Radiant Star Commission. The commission on Radiant Star seems to have been launched in un unusual way, to judge from the following from a Melbourne paper: “There is nothing like a touch of the spectacular, but it was naive indeed the way one of the backers of Radiant Star went about it in the Leger. He looked a simple sailor in a sailor’s simple clothes, 'but the way he continued to band up £1 notes, and £5 hoteb, and £lO notes was a sight for some Of the boys to remember. The uncanny part of it was that he seemed to know which were the best bookmakers to go to, and also which were the ones to whom to hand up the big notes. So the stampede started. Instead' of the ‘drum’ going from the paddock to the leger it was vice versa. Certainly bookmakers inside had bet double figures, but the price soon came down, though it did -not really seem that there was as much money for Radiant Star inside as there had been outside, ■ Was it that the colt had also been supported away from the course, and the long odds again looked for? Verily; indeed, there are no mosquitoes on the men from New Zealand.’’

Phar Lap’s Dam. Mr. F. Armstrong sent his brood mare Entreaty to the Elderslie Stud a few days ago. The daughter of Winkle and Pray er Wheel is in foal to Night Raid, to whom she has already produced Phar Lap and several others, including Friday Night, who is shaping well at Iticcarton in preparation for' three-year-old engagements. Entreaty will be mated this season with the Swynford horse Iliad.

Making His Presence Feit, “The Circle,” a Melbourne racing weekly newspaper, had the following comments on the double success of Mr, W. T. Hazlett at Epsom on September S. with Sir Simper and Irish Chieftain - “Let ns have another laugh or two, or allow Mr. W. T. Hazlett, of the Hot Spring Country, to have it for us. 'A stranger contemplating the wise old bird for the first occasion might surmise that he is one of the type that never smiles. But. if he does not laugh outwardly, he must inside, the way he has floored the Melbourne bookies, z \.s written before, his horses are out to win all the time, but the big thing with him is that he is such a real horsey man that he always, or nearly always, seems to know ns much as his horses when they arc going to win. How he flops it on! When Irish Chieftain took the Inst at Epsom by nn eyelash; it was Mr. Hazlett’s sixth in succession. He said when he went away a few months ago he would come back with ‘a horse or two.’ Well, he has. Not for the bookies, however, to qmike at his presence, or of that of nny of the invaders. They can find n way to limit their liabilities, and Mr. Hazlett and his horses can’t always win. Isn’t the centenary approaching, and won’t the fields get stronger? Mr. Hazlett is in front, but the bookies will continue to meet him —on their terms. And if he does lift the Caulfield Cup, good luck to him. He is the type of owner-backer who gives a fillip, a real fillip, to the whole business.”

Foulings at Westmere. ' Foallngs reported at the Westmere Stud include the followingJenolan (by Thespian).,- a chestnut filly by Chief .Ruler; Timid (by Kildare), a chestnut filly by Chief Ruler; Drama (by Thespian), a chestnut filly by Chief Ruler; Helen (by Limond), a bay colt by Chief Ruler; Huirau (by King Mark), bay filly by Aratisio: Rillct (by Acre), bay filly by Captain Bunsby; Lotus Lily (by Chief Ruler), chestnut filly by Hunting

FOXTON RACES Large Fields: Good Prospects GOLD CUP CONTEST Review of To-day’s Form (By ‘'The Watcher.”) An excellent list of acceptances, the prospect of fine weather, and a track in perfect order, is the promising outlook for the spring meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, to be held to-day. Included in the fields are several New Zealand Cup horses. Good class gallopers like Red Manfred and Gold Trail are down to run, and as there is also a two-year-old race it will be one of the most interesting day’s racing of the early season, while so far as Foxton is concerned it is many years since such a well-filled card has been presented to its patrons. The club has decided to hold betting on the win-and-plaee system. There is not much form among the maiden runners. Lord Moutoa and Harvest Moon were second and fourth respectively ou the course last meeting in June, behind Ethiop, and they are likely to attract most attention from backers. Harvest Moon has since been placed at New Plymouth. Eke Tere may run well, and Martiahess is likely to improve on Marton running, though Eke Tere has done nothing since the flash of form at Feilding last Easter. Misfire ran well at Foxtoh in June, and may show up again, Favourites are' likely to be Harvest Moon, Lord Moutoa and Martianess. Pahu has a good weight to carry in the hurdles, but on his performances, if he runs to his best, be should be well in the the picture. Ruanui and Manawatu are form prospects and it is open to Red Sun and Calydon to show improvement after their experience at Wanganui. The best backed are likely to be Pahu, Ruanui and Calydon.

_ Some smart hacks appear in the Motuiti Handicap, including Pladie, who won at his last start there in June. Sanguine King is a fresh horse likely to run well, while Arena, Courtega, Land. Tax. Wasteland, Bellbroney, Whetuma, Hybiscus, Sweet Musje and Royal Passion are all possibilities. Jt is a difficult race. Money inay go on Arena, Laud Tax and Pladie. Gold Cup Field. Red Manfred, who in making a first appearance, may not be quite forward enough for ten furlongs, but he cannot be discarded. It is understodd that this is the race in. which he will start, Carfex will be well backed on ‘his recent form, while .Gold Trail, if she strikes Jier right form, should not be long in making her presence felt. Arikira is too uncertain to follow, but Huzoor and, Catalogue are both likely to lie improved considerably by their racing at Marton. Princess Doreen has not yet run beyond a mile, but on the way she won the Winter Cup the distance will present no difficulties. and she ,looks like running very prominently. Rereatu should be more at home in the seven furlong event. Lalla .Quex ran well on the second day at Wanganui. .She won the 'Foxton Cup last June, although the field was not nearly so strong as it is to-day. Lady Ronajfl’s winning form at Marton does not look good compared with Wanganui, though she cannot be discarded. Ida Melding usually finds the distance too far. Korokio appears to .be improving, and might bring off a surprise. The two hacks, Spearform and ’Beadmistress, have winning form in their, own class, and they might run well here. Backerswill not find this puzzle easy, but they may make favourites of Catalogue, Princess Doreen and Carfex.

Two-year-old form is represented by the Wanganui winner Legatee, also Symcony and Sergia. A lot of interest will centre in the doings of the fresh horses such as Heritage, but unless they dontain one among them who is a champion._ the unraced lot are likely to 'be handicapped, so'the public may stick to Legatee. Sergia and Symcony.

The distance hack event contains Wanganui form horses in Davistock and King Thomond, Dorado a winner at Manawatu. Boudoir, a winner at Foxton. and Leo Colossus, who was unlucky at Wanganui last Saturday. Purse is another with good form at Wanganui. The best backed may be Boudoir. King Thomond and Dorado (or Davistock).

The Sprinters. With Red Manfred taking on the Cup, his stable-mate, Pin Money, will be more in demand for the Robinson Handicap.

He has been given his weight-for-age as a _ result of his Wanganui Guineas win, and he meets Good Hunting ou the same terms as when the latter him decisively on the first day at Wanganui, so that if Good Hunting runs consistently he should be prominent. Rereatu is sure to be well backed, as he won brilliantly at Wanganui, and it will take all of his 61b. worse terms against Good Hunting to bring him back. Korokio and Midian look the most likely, of the others on recent form, and although Midian’s win a week ago was in hacks it was good form, and he was one of the leading two-year-olds of his season. Money may come for Rereatu. Pin Money and Midian. Running in the hack sprint earlier in the day should throw some light on prospects in the concluding event, in which nothing but good beginners favourably drawn at the post will have a chance. There are plenty of possibilities, but on recent form the best backed may be Pheon. Hybiscus and Ethiop. i The card is as follows: —

11. Nurse hue recommissioned Ringing 1 Cheer, who will later be tried out as a hurdler, and has turned out Rational II until the autumn. His active team in- , eludes Ktiockfni, Scratehnwre Sctir, Polydora, and Cottingham, all of whom will be racing- at the forthcoming early spring fixtures. Other inmates of the stable are a three-year-old gelding by Rapier from Warlove, a three-year-old filly by Rapier from Kildee, a four-year-old filly by Robespierre from Lady Kinloch, and a two-year-old gelding by Rapier from Pledge. NAPIER PARK TRACK It is claimed that as a result of work recently carried out on it, the Napier Park racecourse now looks better than it has for the past 10 or 12 years. One member at the annual meeting recently said of it: ‘‘Without exaggeration it is like a billiard table now.” The president of the club, Mr. C.. Louisson, said that some time ago some,of the members of the club had carried out an examination of the course and found it full of holes and other faults. At a cost of only £l2 the services of a man with a roller had been secured, and as a result of eight days' work a vast improvement had been effected. Mr. Louieson expressed the opinion that the improvement to the course would make a difference to the ■ club’s nominations, for in the past the club had received complaints about I the defects. Trainers, commented Mr. J. Miller, had expressed the view that they had never seen the course looking so well. The inside track had also been rolled out. and had improved out of sight. There was still a good deal that could be done there, however. The course proper, however, had not been in better order in the last 10 or 12 years.

TROTTING NOTES Two Races at Geraldine (By “Overcheck.”) The Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting will be concluded to-day. when the two following races will be decided: — DOMAIN TROT (Harness), £105; 3.34 class: 14 miles. Agility scr Starvale 12 Cannonshot .. scr Graham Direct 24 Dandy Locanda scr Don Wrack .. 24 Locust ser Llewellyn's Pet 24 Marie Potts .. ser Guy Mauritius 24 Nelson Child . ser Adsum 36 Noble Prince . scr Impostor .... 36 J Radiant .... scr Ironside .... 48 . Shoelace .... scr De Soto GO Zest scr ' Ironside and De Soto have been penalised as a result of their winning efforts on the first day. Graham Direct showed good form by running second to De Soto, and he will no doubt receive most support to-day. Don Wrack and Guy Mauritius may follow Graham Direct in the betting, as the former ran fourth in the 10-furlong race, and Guy Mauritius defeated all but Ironside in the Orarl Trot. WINCHESTER TROT (harness), £105; 3.5 class; 11 miles. Agility scr Shoelace .... scr General Thenonia .... scr Sarsfield ser Wink Eye .... scr Grace McElwyn scr Royal de Oro 12 Handicapper . ser .Stella Derby .. 12 Harvest Gale ; scr Guy Mauritius 24 Noble Prince . scr Don Wrack .. 21 Pretender .... scr Doris Derby .. 24 Sage King .... scr Llewellyn's Pet 24 Silver Adsum 36 Axworthy scr Ironside .... 48 Silver Axworthy showed good form by running second fo Ezywurk at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and is likely to be well supported in the Winchester Trot Handicap. Guy Mauritius should be well suited by the distance, and if he does not ■ incur a penalty as a result of the decision of the Domain Trot, should give a good account of himself in this race. Adsum ran well on Thursday, and should be all the better for the outing. Three that may be accorded most support are Silver Axworthy, Guy Muritius and Adsum. TROTTING PROGRAMME (To the Editor.) Sir, —As a constant follower of trotting. I would like to suggest through your paptir an alteration in the running of the programme at Hutt park. I would reverse the running of the two slow class pacer races, and would suggest the slow one and a quarter-mile being the second race, and a slow one anti a half-mile the sixth race. This would do away with the three last races being one and a quarter miles, also give the winner of the first race a better chance, as he is sure to be penalised 48 yards. This I think would make a great day's sport greater,—l am. etc., TROTTING ENTHUSIAST. Waikau-ae. Having found a tenant for- his house at Riccarton, in anticipation of an extended visit to Australia. A. E. Ellis has taken up his residence at New Brighton, where he is having a good rest during his period of suspension. He will be free to ride again after October 18. so he will be available for the Caulfield Cup, also the Melbourne Cup meeting and other events during the Victorian racing carnival in. November. !His present intention. however, is not to go to Australia, though his plans are subject to alteration in the event of inducements being offered him to make the trip.
