TRAINING OF TEACHERS
There is both logic and common sense in the answer given by the Minister of Education to the representations of the four university colleges that they should take over the training of the teachers from the education boards. It may seem sound in theory that as teaching is a profession the University should include the students in the art among those in other learned professions of which it is the traditional foster-parent. But the teacher-student has also to be taught how to teach, and that can only be done by providing facilities which will bring him nearer to the realities of his work than would be practicably possible under a university college - system. The present affiliations between the training colleges and the university colleges provide all the facilities for higher learning that appear to be necessary. Teacherstudents are enabled to attend university college lectures, and take degrees. In their training colleges they are introduced to the practical side of teaching. %
