LEVIN HOME

Annual Gift Tea

Special interest was given to the annual gift tea at the Levin Memorial Home, which took place yesterday afternoon, by the presence of her Excellency Ladv Bledisloe. Shp was received on her arrival by Aiiss Archibald, the president, Lady Luke, and Mrs. Stace, the children of the home forming a guards.of honour, and one of the smallest of them presenting her with a bouquet of flowers. Lady Bledisloe was taken to the big class-room, where many of the visitors were assembled, and where Miss Archibald welcomed her in a few charming words, speaking particularly of the enthusiasm with which her Excellency had identified herself in any work done to help others. Lady Luke said that the home was a great acquisition to Wellington, and urged those present to give as generously as they could in aid of its funds. In speaking of the regret felt by everyone at the impending departure of Lord and Lady Bledisloe, she said that it was hoped we should have the pleasure of seeing them in the Dominion again later on. wfopn they were not so tied down with their duties to the country, so that we might see more of them individually than we did now. Lady Luke paid a tribute to the splendid work of Miss Nesta Carwell-Cooke, who instructed the children in dancing, and to Miss Osborn, under whose direction the classes in first-aid were given.

Lady Bledisloe spoke of her pleasure in coming again to their home, where what impressed her most was the happy atmosphere of home that made their surroundings so pleasant. She congratulated the executive on the balance-sheet. It was a most unusual thing to find a bank balance to the good, and she hoped that after the day’s sale they would find their’s had grown considerably larger. They were fortunate in having Miss Richardson as matron, for she attended to the spiritual as well as to the bodily welfare of the girls in her charge; she took, in fact, their mothers’ place. Delightful songs and dances were then given by the girls, Mrg. J. A. Doctor playing the accompaniments in place of Miss Brown, who was unable to be there. A demonstration of first-aid was also given, which proved the excellent instruction they had received. The silver cup donated by Mrs. Albert Stace gives special zest to the work. The flowers brought, and sold, by Mrs. Gillespie. Mrs. Holdsworth, Mrs. C. E. Levin, Mrs. Mayer, Mrs. Kent, and Miss Gillespie, realised the sum of £ll. The cake-stall was In charge of Mrs. McEldowney, Mrs. Archibald, and Mrs. Eric Luke, assisted by Mrs. Harry Longmore and Miss Dorothy Archibald. The Rowland Cake Kitchen gave two beautifully decorated cakes for a guessing competition, the winners being.: Mrs. Lane, 1; and Miss Crammond, 2. This stall realised £22/10/-.

Miss Greenwood, Miss Morrah and Mrs. Potts were in charge of the children’s stall, which attracted many purchasers. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Stace, Mis,s Young, Miss Barry, and Mrs. Shepherd, assisted by .Mrs. Alister Young. Miss McLeod, Miss Hume, Miss Johnson, Miss McDougall, Miss Shepherd, Miss McKnight, and Miss Sutcliffe.

The donations of money and proceeds of the various stalls amounted to £75, besides groceries, jams, a sheep from Sirs. ’Gray, Pukenia Bar. and other useful gifts.
