THE SOCIAL ROUND

Social Evening A social gathering arranged by the committee of the Parents’ Association of Queen Margaret College was held in the college hall on Wednesday evening, when a delightful programme was given to a most appreciative audience. There were songs by Miss I. M. Hurst and Mr. K. E. Luke. Several items were given by a string quartet composed of Miss Ruth Reid, Dr. A. C. Keys, Messrs. R. Davies and J. S. Lomas. Miss Vivian Tait recited, and violin solos were played by Miss D. Inkersell. The musical programme was supplemented by a much-appreciated reading of J. M. Barrie’s humorous play ‘‘Seven Women,” by Mesdames J. K. Edie and W. Ross, and Messrs. W. Ross, F. Pears, and F. J. Jones. Supper brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. Free Ambulance Dance The social hall at the Free Ambulance Station was filled with a gay crowd of dancers on Tuesday evening on the occasion of another of the enjoyable series of dances organised by Mrs: F. S. Ball and Mrs. C. B. Lempriere in aid of the Wellington District Free Ambulance. During the evening there were competitions and novelty dances, the winners being Mr. Affleck, Mr. and Mrs. Colyer, and Mr. and Mrs. Boniface. Mr. F. Roffe, superintendent of the Free Ambulance, conveyed the appreciation of the Ambulance Board to all concerned for their efforts and assistance. Ball at Masterton Dancers were present in large numbers at a masked ball held in the Masterton Municipal Hall on Wednesday night, in aid of the candidature of Miss E. Ralph in the local Y.M.C.A. Queen Carnival. The band was excellent, and extras were played by Messrs. D. Power and B. and J. Peters. The programme was diversified with songs by the Misses Ralph and V. Judd, solo tap dances by Mr. D. Bothwell, dances by a children’s ballet trained by Miss A. Pragnell, and the grand march to pipe music played by Pipe-Major Murdoch McKenzie and Piper Hounslow. Accompaniments were played by Miss Eva Hoar and Mr. C. Mills. The M.C.’s were Messrs. J. J. Hunter, W. R. Nicol, Br. Seddon and C. K. Long. During the evening Miss Ralph was presented with a bouquet by little Rona Perry. Members of the women’s committee, which did splendid work under the guidance of Mrs. M. G. Mackay, were: Mesdames Rogers, Pike, Torrance, Emery, Kilgour, Rutherford, Elmsley, Hair, Welch, Burling, Kerr and Young. The men’s committee comprised Messrs. W. R. Nicol, B. Seddon, C. K. Long, R. Shaw, D. McKay, M. G. Mackay, J. V. Dolan, G. G. Jackson, and W. Laird. The duties of secretary were in the hands of Mr. Jackson. Messrs. Walker and Pearce assisted at the door, Mr. McMillan in the cloakroom, and Mr. Cottle at the refreshment stall.
