North Island Titles The large crowd at the Wellington Town Hall on Saturday night was treated to two fine displays of physical strength in the finals of the North Island lightweight and heavyweight tug-o’-war championships, both titles being won by Koputaroa (Levin), after exciting pulls. Both Moera (Wellington), lightweight, and Dealy’s (Wellington), heavyweight, run-ners-up in their respective divisions, put up fine performaiices. particularly the Dealy team. In the heavyweight championship final Koputaroa was represented by I. Palmer No. 1, E. Hudson 2, R. McKenzie 3, H. Hood 4, F. Graham 5, Dealy’s combination comprising P. Feeney No. 1, TO’Regan 2. H. Davis 3, C. Grace 4, ami F. Parker 5. Tlie initial gong saw Koputaroa immediately secure an inch advantage. The second minute represented a further half-inch gain to Koputaroa, which was increased to two and a quarter inches early in the last minute.. A great final effort by Dealy’s saw Koputaroa’s advantage reduced to 14 inches at the gong. Immediately the rope was released for the second pull Koputaroa held a quarter-inch advantage. which was gradually increased to three and a half inches', and it looked as though they were going to pull Dealy’s across the board when a further half-inch went their way. Great excitement reigned in the last minute of the pull when Dealy’s reduced the gap to two inches and held Koputaroa to the bell. The only alteration in the Koputaroa team for the lightweight championship was P. Lee. who replaced E. Hudson at No 3, the Moera team being C. Burns No: 1, A. Collins 2, M. Burns 3, T. Belsham 4. and T. Hawkings 5. Although Moera made great efforts to hold the opposition. th,ey were not quite good enough, and were beaten for the North Island title by two straight pulls. Mr. D. Dunne (Moera) refereed both finals.
