TRAMWAY OFFICIALS
Manners—Good and Bad
“D.McG.,” writing in the September issue of the Wellington “Tramways Journal,” addresses a few words to the staff on a matter which affects to a greater or lesser extent the popularity of the service. On the whole the bearing and manners of the tramway staff, who are thrust into continual contact with the public, is satisfactory. It is only here and there that a certain “roughness” in address may obtrude. The importance of manner is emphasised rather neatly in the following extract from “D.McG.’s” observations: “Education is certainly a great asset, hut something more is needed in passenger transport. Ability is another great asset, but adaptability is greater (not necessarily through the size of the word). Personality which can be used for or against the individual by himself may or may not be an asset. It is certain that good manners, and equally bad manners, make lasting impressions on the people on whom they ure exercised. “It may be said that good manners Is the art of never hurting or offending others intentionally, and also that good manners will smooth out many difficulties and oil the wheels of transport and of life. Bad-mannered people, on the other hand, though they may not realise it, are really exhibiting a form of stupidity, for they easily make enemies, and make life harder for themselves and for everyone with whom they come in contact. Manner, then, tends to make the man, and goes a long way In making or marring a ‘policy.’ ”
