CATTLE FOR CHINA
Successful Shipment From Wellington
INTEREST AT SHANGHAI Remarkable success attended the recent shipment of dairy cattle from Wellington to China on the steamer Winifred Moller, formerly the Union Company’s Katoa. Writing from Shanghai on July 18, Moller and Company informed Dalgety and Co., Ltd., who arranged the shipment in New Zealand, that the Winifred Moller made an excellent passage from Wellington, averaging 10} knots for the whole distance. The steamer left with 250 head of cattle and only seven died on the passage, this loss being more than balanced by about a dozen births. The extreme heat—up to 104 degrees—told on the cattle during the latter part of the passage, the deaths being due to this cause.
Described as the largest shipment of dairy cattle ever taken to China, the arrival at Shanghai of the Winifred Moller caused considerable interest there, particularly among the Chinese. The “North China Daily News,” describing the arrival of the ship and the unloading operations, said that Chinamen were swarming everywhere about the vessel and the wharf.
“The first beast to go over shortly after 3 p.m. was a cow. Even she must have been surprised with the reception she received. The Chinese came round the pen like wasps after jam. One would think they had never seen a cow in their lives before. Everyone wanted to touch the animal as she was led out of the pen with a result' that she became nervous. At first refusing to move she suddenly ran down the connecting planks between the wharf and the mainland. However the Chinese hanging on to her managed to stop her from careering into the crowd. The animal was then taken straight on to one of the-railway cattle trucks, which were waiting for the animals. The second animal discharged was one of the four Holstein bulls. Contrary to expectations he was quiet and did not give as much trouble as the first cow.”
Most of the cattle were sent by railway up to Hangchow, very few being retained at Shanghai.
