DAIRY REGULATIONS CRITICISED
Restriction of Markets “INTERFERENCE WITH FREE INDUSTRY” Strongly criticising the new dairy regulations as making It impossible to quote prices for New Zealand produce outside England and confining business to selected markets, Mr. J. T. Martin, at last night’s meeting of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, said it was another instance of boards imposing regulations without giving them the necessary consideration. Dairy boards to-day, he added, were so constituted as to be without the full representation of the mercantile interests which possessed. the experience to deal adequately with marketing. _ , , He moved as a remit for the annual conference of the Associated Chambers that “the new dairy regulations introduced on August 1 by the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board are an unwarrantable interference with free trading, inimical to the best Interests > of the farming community and another instance of the ineptitude of this board to deal with complicated marketing conditions.” , “I challenge any merchant in New Zealand,” Mr. Martin continued, “to buy New Zealand butter and cheese f.o.b. and keep within the restrictions laid down by the regulations. In proof of this I can say that since the regulations came into force oh August I it has not been possible to buy any dairy produce f.o.b. New Zealand. I am confident that when the dairy directors realise what these regulations mean, there will be a storm of disapproval throughout the length and breadth of the country. Already in the short time they have been in force there have been objections.” Mr.-Martin’s views met with the full approval of the council and his remit was adopted. -
