CANE-CUTTERS STRIKE
Menace of Rats in Fields
Brisbane, August 21.
Cane-cutters in the Herbert River district are on strike because they are not allowed to burn cane prior to cutting in order to destroy the rats, which it is believed caused an outbreak of Weil’s disease.
The unruly element among the strikers asserted itself and parties went from farm to farm, overturning all the cane trucks found on the train lines. A demonstration was made at the Halifax Police station and the police fired shots into the air, dispersing the crowd.
