TO RELIEVE BYRD
Second Attempt Starts New York, August 5. A Little America tractor party, including Dr. Poulter and Messrs. Waite, radio operator, and Demas, driver, on Saturday began a second attempt to reach Rear-Admiral Byrd’s advance base, the tractor dragging three runner sledges astern with a load of 374 gallons of petrol, which will be distributed at various depots along the route for use on the return trip. The party, carried two mouths’ rations because most of the trail flags are buried under snow, and Dr. Poulter intends to resort strictly to navigation. Communication with Admiral Byrd was lost on July 20 and finally restored on July. 27, when the Admiral wirelessed saying that his receiver was not functioning. Being advised that a second attempt was being made to bring him back, Byrd replied that he would: keep a light burning on top of the roof of his hut. and also fly a kite carrying a light. - The temperature was 13 degrees below zero when the tractor started, compared with 71 below on the previous start. The sky is overcast, but clearness is forecast.
