To the accompaniment of tolling bells, the body of Dr. Dollfuss. in a metal coffin, drawn by six black horses, was taken the half-mde journey from the Chancellery to the Town Hall in order to lie in state. Next were Prince Starhemberg and Major Fey. carrying revolvers, contrary to the usual custom. Dr. Dollfuss’s wife and parents were too overcome with grief to participate in the procession. His sister and brother-in-law. clad in rustic garb, sprinkled holy water on the coffin after 5 t was deposited on the catafalque. Dr. Dollfuss died almost penniless. The funeral has been fixed for four o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday. The State is providing for the Dollfuss family. Frau Dollfuss arrived from Italy by neronlane. and was taken straight from the aerodrome to see her husband’s body. Few officials were present. Medical Aid Refused. The police who were on duty at the Chancellery yesterday state that the terrorist gang asked them at 1-45 p.m. whether they were able to render firsiaid. They were taken to Dr. Dollfuss, who was unconscious and bleeding freely. “We asked the leader of the gang.” said a member of the police, “to send for a doctor. He replied that nobody could leave the house. He allowed us to nut emergency bandages on the wounds in the right armpit and left ear.
“Dr. Dollfuss recovered consciousness and asked to be taken to hospital, or as an alternative to have a doctor and Driest. His pleadings were of no avail. Then Dr. Dollfuss, turning to us. said: ‘Children, you are good to me. I thank you. Why aren’t the others the same? I only wanted peace. May God forgive the others.’ ( His last words were of love to his wife and children. He died at 3.45.” The Pope’s message to Frau Dollfuss, President Miklas, and Dr. Schuschnigg, condemns the “spirit of hate deliberately encouraged, which led to this damnable and bloody act.” The Pope described Dr. Dollfuss as a faithful son of the Church and defender of his country. The entire civilised world would condemn the murder. King George’s Sympathy. The following telegram from the King, states a British Official Wireless message, has been dispatched to •'he President of the Austrian Republic: “It is with horror that I'have learned of. the dastardly murder of the Federal Chancellor. Dr. Dollfiiss, and I hasten to convey to you, Monsieur le President, my profound sympathy with you and the Austrian nation at this tragic, moment. Pray also convey to Frau Dollfuss on behalf of the Queen and myself our heartfelt condolences.” The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, Sir John Simon, and Sir Austen Chamberlain, as well as members- of the Diplomatic Corps, called at the Austrian Legation, London, to-dgv. A Requiem Mass for Dr. ( Dollfuss will be held later at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Westminster, London. DISMISSED CORPORAL Actual Murderer of Dollfuss (Received July 27, 7.30 p.m.) Vienna, July 27. The police announce that the actual murderer of Dr. Dollfuss was ex-Cor-poral Franz Holz weber, who was discharged from the army in 1032 for engaging in Nazi agitation. The Nazi party is now officially disclaiming responsibi’ity for the rising, declaring that it must have been organised by irresponslbles. ROOSEVELT’S REGRETS (Received July 27, 7.30 p.m.) Washington, July 27. President Roosevelt has sent a message of condolence to the Austrian Government concerning the assassination of Dr. Dollfuss.
