'‘You never know what mav be in them. And talking about saddle-bags, the chttD that vent dashing past me just over the hili back there was carrying a pretty heavy cargo in his." . . ■ “What? Dicl you say someone passed you, riding hard? how ion,, &S °“Oh, about, a quarter-hour, I'd say,” Dering answered. “He was riding a big horse with three white stockings and—” ' “Straight ahead T'- The loader was in the saddle and his two men already mounted. ■' . “Straight alien Cl, and going full tilt, and his horse hard. Good luck.” cried Dering as they galloped away from him. . He turned to his horse aud smiled. He slipped his hand under the mane, to feel the satchel safely there, ■ “Twenty thousand paper pounds, otucj so very small: small enough,to fit into a satchel against a horse’s neck. Did tbe fools think I’d carry sovereigns with me when there were thousandpound notes there for .a quick hand to lift?” And Glen Dering, bank robber, smiled as he rode on, following tbe long path behind his pursuers,—A.
