SIX MONTHS’ DELAY

- ♦ Construction of Central Fire Station SITE NOT YET READY Approval by the .Local Government Loans Board of the raising of £60,000 for the purchase of the Clyde Quay School property and the erection on it of a new central fire brigade station has not yet cleared the way for the Wellington Fire Board to proceed with this work. Although the board can secure the money, sanction for raising the loan, it being over £20,000, has to be approved by Cabinet, and then gazetted as a public intimation. Then, again, the Loans Board insists on approval of the plans by the Public Works Department before the work can go forward. As this will entail much work, the board at yesterday’s meeting decided that sketch plans submitted to the Loans Board be now handed to the board’s architect, Mr. A. C. Mitchell, A.R.1.8.A., and that he consult with the Inspector of Fire Brigades, Mr. R. Girling Butcher, and the superintendent, Mr. C. A. Woolley, as to the requirements of the station. Hitch Over the Site. It was mentioned by the chairman, Mr. N. Nelson, that although a start could possibly be made with excavations on the Clyde Quay frontage of the site as soon as the loan formalities were complied with, it would be at least six months before the school Itself would come into the hands of the Fire Board. He reported having received a letter from the Education Board as to terms of payment for the land —£5000 at once and £20,000 on the Fire Board taking possession in six months. The idea of paying £5OOO as a deposit was scouted by members of the board. Mr. S. S. Dean said it had always been understood that the board was to pay on delivery. Finally it was left to the chairman to consult with Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman of the Education, Board, regarding terms of payment. The sketch plans> show the engine house situated In the centre of the Clyde Quay frontage, directly opposite the eastern end of Wakefield Street. The garages and workshops are provided for along the southern boundary. A large sunny exercise .yard is to be arranged, betweep the engine house and the houses for the staff on the Roxburgh Street frontage.
