WISDOM PREVAILS IN SAN FRANCISCO
Largely owing to the conservative Labour element, it appears, the most serious aspect of the strike in San Francisco—a general hold-up of the community—has disappeared. Arbitration is to take . the place of violence and the blockading of community services. The “American Federation of Labour has officially dissociated itself from the general strike, and the president of the Teamsters’ Union , has congratulated Labour on “a great victory for conservatism and sanity,” incidents suggesting that while the extreme elements no doubt saw in the maritime strike a convenient ppportunity for making a bid for ■an outbreak of revolutionary disorder, American sentiment, both generally and in the ranks of Labour strongly anti-Communist, refused to be stampeded. The trouble, however, is by no means over. The maritime strike remains to be settled, and the major issue, the right of industrial unions, as distinct from company unions, to collective bargaining as provided for under the N.R.A;, is still the paramount • 'question preoccupying the American Federation 'of Labour.
