ALAS AND ALACK.

An inspector called at a school and announced that he was going to test, the bovs’ knowledge of English history. The history master stood by nervously as the examination proceeded, hoping that his pupils would do him credit. To his relief, they answered quite well for a time, and the inspector begun to look pleased. Then he came to the Kings of England, and selected King John, who was known as i John Lackland.

“Now,” said the inspector, “can you tell me who was the father of John Lackland?” , There was a long and dreadful pause, but no hand was raised. The history master looked imploringly at Tommy Brown, the bright boy of the school, hoping against hope t>hat be would come, to the rescue. Tommy determined to do his best and raised his hand. “Ah, I thought somebody would be Able to answer my question,” said the inspector. “Well, who was John Lackland’s father?” “Please, sir." stammered Tommy, “Mr Lackland!”
