RATES LOST TO CITY

Government-Occiipied Property “The executive obtained a return from the town clerk during the year showing the amount lost to ratepayers due to the fact that the Government pays no rates upon property it occupies in Wellington,” states the report of the chairman of the Wellington Ratepayers’ Association to be presented at the annual meeting on August 22. “On Its freehold property other than parliament Buildings, Government House, and schools, the total of rates forgone by the city is over £20,000 per annum. On rented property which the Government occupies the city loses another £5OOO per annum,” states the report. “It will no doubt come as a surprise to ratepayers to learn that in addition to the £25,000 per annum the city loses upon property occupied by the Gov ernment no rates are paid by the Government upon property abandoned to the State Advances and other Government departments by defaulting mortgagors. The sum lost to the city in this way during the past year or two must have been considerable.”
