HIRE OF TAXIS

Maximum and Minimum Fares Fixed SHILLING FOR TWO PERSONS Changes In the by-law governing charges for taxi hire were made by the Wellington City Council last night. The principal alteration is a reduction of the number of passengers paying the minimum fare from four to two. The maximum and minimum fares payable were Axed as follow: —For a distance not exceeding one mile for one or two passengers, 1/-; for each and every additional half-mile, 6d.; for each and every additional passenger over two 6d. extra for the first mile and 6d. extra for each additional half-mile. Waiting time is to be charged for at the rate of 6d. for every complete five minutes. Luggage on the carrier will cost 6ct..

Cr. H. A. Huggins, presenting the amendments to the council, said the committee that had looked into the question had considered that although some drivers were experiencing hardship, from the public point of view *t was not reasonable to increase the minimum fare to more than 1/-. Therefore the reduction in the number of passengers under that charge had been made. He had conferred with a number of drivers who had said they could make the 1/- charge pay. If was impossible to please all of them —they were in about four camps—but he considered the balance had been struck fairly. Cr.-R. McKeen said he had made inquiries and he had found that the taxi drivers did not want an unrestricted fare.
