EMPTY WHARVES

Slack Day on Waterfront Yesterday was one of the slackest, days the "Wellington waterfront has seen this year. There were no overseas liners in port, except the Makura and Maunganui, both of which are laid up, and. very few coastal vessels. Such ships as were in port were principally berthed at the Queen's Wharf, and yesterday afternoon the only vessel berthed north of the Ferry Wharf was the Wainui at Pipitea Wharf. To-day the port will be slightly busier. The Union Company’s liner Monowai, from Sydney via Auckland, is due at 6 a.m., and will berth at No. 1 south Queen’s Wharf, while the Blue Star Line motor-ship Tuscan Star is due at noon from London, in ballast, and will berth at the Glasgow Wharf to commence loading for London. There should also be a few more coastal vessels in port than there were yesterday. To-morrow morning tlie C. & D. Line steamer Port Hunter is due from Lyttelton to continue loading for London, while the Shaw, Savill liner Mataroa is due late in the afternoon to complete her Homeward loading. On Monday the liner Ruahine is due from London via Auckland, and the motor-ship Orari from Liverpool via Auckland, so that the early part of next week should be fairly busy. Tlie busy export season is over, and from now until the middle of next December the wharves will rarely be very well filled with overseas liners.
