RED KERBSTONES

New Type in Wellington A brick curb and channel block has been introduced by the Wellington City Council for use in the formation of footpaths and watertables. The new type of block has been used in ' Palliser Road, between Shannon Street and Roseneath. and it is now being used in the Homebush Estate at Khandallah. where the construction of a number of bouses at one time has necessitated attention to the roughly formed streets. The new block is understood to be cheaper and stronger than the concrete ones and, being medium red. has a more pleasing colour than light grey concrete. On the other hand, the red curbs do not give such a clear definition of the side of the road as concrete ones when they are shown up by the headlights of a car. The colour of curbs has an important influence on the “atmosphere” of streets, as may be observed by comparing the dark grey stone used in Auckland with the light grey footpaths of Wellington. ■
