A HAPPY AUGURY
Knox Winter Club Opening The opening night of the Knox Winter Club, held in Knox Hall on Tuesday evening, was particularly successful, proving a happy augury for the future success of tlie club. The hall was filled with both young and older folk, most of whom had donned fancy dress. There were many striking and original costumes. During the evening the Rev. J. Thomson Macky thanked those who had arranged the programme, those who had contributed items, and those who had provided the supper. Mr. J. Hopkirk was. the M.C. for the evening, and games and competitions whiled away the evening very happily. The prizes awarded for the best fancy costumes were:— First, “Fire Prevention” (Mrs. Joyce) ; "Opening of Duck Shooting Season, 1434” (Rev. J. Thomson Macky). The programme was as follows: — Songs, Mrs. Burgess and Miss Thea Smith; recitation, by “An Anonymous Gentleman.” The club has been inaugurated with a view to providing social life during the winter months for members of the congregation, and there will be lectures on the drama, a Scottish night, etc. A very successful evening closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. BRIDGE AFTERNOON A most happy and successful bridge afternoon took place at St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, on Wednesday afternoon, the proceeds of which are in. aid of the “Business Queen,” Baby Mitchell, in connection with the forthcoming Plunket carnival. A delicious afternoon tea was provided by the committee. There were several "tables of players in private homes.
