CHARGE OF FORGERY
Labourers Given Chance Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May 2. On a charge of forging an endorsement on a cheque for 15/- drawn on the Palmerston North Hospital Board, George Watson, labourer, aged 54 year-, and John Spain, labourer, aged 54 years, were convicted and discharged by Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North this morning when they appeared for sentence. Spain was found guilty by a jury yesterday and Watson pleaded guilty to the offence in the Magistrate's Court and was committed for trial. His Honour explained to the prisoners that the crime of forgery was a serious one, and it was for that teason that the maximum penalty was two years’ imprisonment. However, in the, present case the amount involved was only a small one. The accused had been in gaol a. month and he would take that into consideration. Though both of them had been before the court previously some years ago, it appeared that they had been trying to live straight lives;.
