Milk for Children

Sir, —My previous letter that you so kindly published on April’ 19 appears to have caused some amusement (?) on the part of “Practical,” of Shannon, and his reply calls for some comment, which, as snace is valuable, must be brief. For “Practical’s” benefit my nom-de-plume "Looking Forward” refers not to nationalruin. but to the avoidance of it by means of closer co-operation between town and country. The practicability of my suggestions of State co-operation with farmers re suitable transport, co-oper-ative milking plant, etc., is, possibly, a matter of debate, but without having been tried is worthy of consideration rather than condemnation. . Regmling who is going to pay for these facilities—it would be better for public funds to be utilised for getting .such a valuable food as milk to the cities than to have to support at a later date C 3 victims of child malnutrition.

Regarding rising at 4.a.m., “Practical” hasn’t had that on his own. I have done my share of it and so, might I add, have quite a large number of people now dwelling in the cities, but who have been brought up in the country. Regarding his statements of the disadvantages of town supply, other practical farmers disagree with him. As fof pig-raising being unprofitable without skim milk, well, mothers and children have a prior claim to nigs.

Your correspondent. “Producer." in this morning’s paper, and Mr. A. Campbell at the recent meeting of the Eketahuna branch of the Farmers’ Union, have expressed a more helpful attitude of the practical co-operation that is going to get this country out of the present mess. —I am. etc.. . LOOKING FORWARD. Wellington. .April 30. '
