FORGERY OF CHEQUE
Labourer Found Guilty LENIENCY RECOMMENDED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, May 1. Pleading not guilty to a charge of forging the name of H. Bulford to ft cheque for 15/- drawn in favour of the Palmerston North Hospital Board ami a second count of uttering a cheque, John Spain, labourer, aged 54 years, appeared before bls Honour Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North this afternoon. A clerk in the employ of the hospital board said be had given a cheque for 15/- to a man named Watson, who represented he was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Bulford. Detective 0. Power said he interviewed accused, who made a statement. In this accused said he had suggested to WLtson that be should try to cash a docket issued to accused by the hospital board for rent. Watson had received a cheque for 15/-, which he had endorsed and cashed at an hotel. Accused s,aid that although Watson had forged an endorsement on the cheque, he admitted that he was as much to blame as Watson. Watson had given him 13/- of the money, tVhich he bad expen/ed on rent and food. The jury found accused guilty on both charges, with a recommendation to leniency. Accused was remanded for sentence.
