BRIGHTER DISPLAYS

Autumn Flower Shows / ■ MIRAMAR SOCIETY When opening officially the autumn show of the Miramar Horticultural Society on Saturday, Mr. G. S. Nicoll, secretary of the Wellington Horticultural Society, and secretary of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, remarked upon the improvement he saw every time he visited the show, and complimented the society. Mr. Nicoll said that he noticed a wonderful improvement in colour at autumn shows. At one time there would be nothing but chrysanthemums. While he was an admirer of chrysanthemums, he thought they were somewhat lacking in colour compared with other autumn flowers, but now that dahlias had come into fashion, there was a splash of colour. He did not desire to belittle the chrysanthemum, which required daily attention for months, and for the cultivation of which he had great admiration. Mr. Nicoll remarked on the unfortunate circumstance 'that the shows of two affiliated societies —Northland and Miramar —were on the same day. A section for canaries has been introduced this year, and promises to develop. Large displays for exhibition only were made by Messrs. A. u. Crawford and D. E. Maxwell, and trade displays by Messrs. W. H. Kent and F. Westbury. , The flowers were judged by Bell, and the children's work by Mrs. E. M. Fevre. The champion chrysanthemum wto a “William Turner,” entered xby Mr. A.
