Christchurch, April 16. “The Government cannot give the country a lead in the restoration of wages and salary cuts till the public finances are fn a better position,” said the Prime Minister, tbe Rt, Hon. G. W. Forbes, in an interview. He added that it was not to be expected that extra taxation should be imposed so thai salary cuts could be restored. Commenting on the Budgetary situation, tho Prime Minister said that tbe benefit of the rise in prices had not yet been felt as far as the Government finances were concerned, as operations were based on last year’s taxation. PARTIAL RESTORATION Wanganui Fire Board Salary “Cuts” By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, April 16. The Wanganui Fire Board to-day decided that the time was opportune to commence a gradual restoration* of the 10 per cent, cut in salaries. Accordingly, 2} per cent, of the deduction is to be restored as from the commencement of the current financial year. N Tlie board also continued its policy of reducing the levy on the City Council and the combined insurance companies, and both organisations will benefit by £6O per annum each. Last year the reduction made was £l2O per annum to each body.
