WEEK-END GOLF

First Watt Cup Match SHANDON OUTPLAY TITAHI The outstanding feature of the golfing programme on Saturday afternoon was the-first Watt Cup match of the season, which resulted in Shandon, the holders of the cup, outplaying Titabi, last year’s runners-up, by 9J games to 2J, on the Shandon links. The course was in excellent order, the greens, in particular, being fast and true, but a stiff northerly wind caused scoring to be below the standard usually attained in these contests. The following are the results, the Shandon player being mentioned first: R. G. Hayward beat M. R. Moore, 1 up. . , M. R. Bowling beat R. F. Aitken, t> and 4. C. E. Hollis beat S. H. Boon. 4 and 3. D. M. Boyd heat F. B. Carr, 5 and 3. AV. J. Davidge beat C. AValker. 5 and 4. W. R. Tustin lost to D. A. Crombie. 1 down. R. Lulham lost to A. Moore. 2 and 1. C. T- Brown and AV. F. Shirer, all square. AV. R. Stuckey beat A. C. Henman. 6 and 5. C. Turner heat S. Crichton. 4 and 2. J. Taylor beat J. Lulham, 7 and 5. F. Desmond beat H. Murpby, 1 up. A Hard Battle. The tussle between the No. l’s, Hayward (Shandon) and Max Moore (Titahi), did not finish until the home green was reached, when Hayward sank a 6-foot putt to take the hole in 4 to 5, and the match by 1 up. The wind appeared to bother them on the out journey, both pulling and slicing off the tees at times.) Moore got into trouble at the third through attempting to drive over the plantation, but this was a foolhardy undertaking against the strong wind, as the Titabi player discovered after planting two balls in the pines. They were all square at the turn, both taking approximately 42 for the run out. Moore ran down a 34-foot putt for a win in 3 at the twelfth (264 yards). Hayward retaliated with a 3 at the fifteenth (273 yards). Hayward played the better golf coming home, and it was only brilliant recoveries which enabled Moore to keep level. Hayward ran back in 37 to Moore’s 40. Bowring proved too good for Aitken in the game between the No. 2’s. The Tltahi player was 4 up at the turn, and drew away to take the game by 8 up. The Titahi man, who has been playing well lately, could do nothing right in the high wind. The only Titabi men to meet with success were the captain, 1). A. Crombie, and the veteran A. Moore, who controlled the ball well, while F. AV. Shirer managed to square bis game. Other games in ,the inter-club match resulted: — J. B. Melvin beat C. Gyles, 2 and 1. C. E. Letford beat T. Dodson, 7 and R. G, Comerford lost to R. G. Mexted, 1 down. T. P. McCarthy beat J. Watt, 3 and 'F. V, Johansen beat W Gichard, 3 and 2.

IMPROVED NEW GOLF BALL Cabled advice has just been received from England of a new golf ball (lint has leapt into public favour and liden acclaimed by leading gplfers as "the ball we’ve been waiting for.” This new ball is a “Silver King” with a new "Bramble” marking. Little information about it is yet available, except that it has a peculiar and entirely new “convex” marking on the renowned tough “Silver King” cover. Golfers, in New Zealand can look forward with keen interest to playing with this new bolt,— Advt.
