SEARCHLIGHT FOR THIEVES
Plundered Army Stores
Powerful searchlights were used recently in an elaborately organised surprise search of the workers nt the big stores depot of the Royal Army Ordnance Co_rps at Didcot. This step was taken following the loss of hundreds of pounds’ worth of stores.
Even senior ranks of the military establishment wore searched, a procedure said to be almost unprecedented in Army history.
It is understood that, the chief constable of the War Department comstabu-
larv directed the operations in co-opera-tion with Col. J. H. Stone. Chief Ordnance Officer. , Wien the men left, work they found the searchlights illuminating the road leading to the main gates, thus presumably making it impossible for a man to dispose of stolen goods before reaching the search party. "War Department. C.I.D. men were also posted every few yards. It. is understood, however, that the culprits escaped. Petty pilfering of all sorts came to light, but the serious offenders were too clever.
