BUDGET ATTACKED
Free State Expenditure SECRET SERVICE VOTE London, March 20. Senator McLoughlin, criticising the Free Slate Estimates, pointed out that instead of Mr. de Valera’s promised saving of £2.000.0(10, he had increased expenditure by £8,000,000 compared with Mr. Cosgrave’s last Budget. The most sinister increase was the jump in the Secret Service Vote from £2OOO to £25.000. If the Government only existed by subsidising secret service agents, its mandate had ended. Senator McLoughlin said that 130.000 were now receiving relief, compared with 59.000 in 1929. The Senate passed the Central Fund Bill, after which it considered the Defence Forces Bill. An amendment limiting the operation of the Bill to June 30 was carried by 27 votes to 18, the ex-Minister. Mr. Ernest Blythe, declaring it unfortunate that the Government had conferred administrative powers on men lacking training. Speculation has arisen on the Government’s attitude, as unless it accepts the amended Bill, the army, police, and military tribunal will be automatically dissolved. Otherwise the Bill will be held up for 18 months. Tn the meantime the army and police must continue.
