THE WHITE BUTTERFLY
Concern Among Growers of Produce Dominion Speciai Service Auckland, March 20. Although many people at Pukekohe have not yet seen a white butterfly, this enemy of swede and cabbage crops is becoming numerous in tbe district. It appears to have multiplied' rapidly of late. Whereas until a week ago it was practically unknown here, it is now becoming common. Growers of produce are very much concerned, as cabbage forms an important item in the output of the district. The grub which develops from the eggs of the butterfly feeds on the cabbage, riddling it with holes. War has already been declared on the pest growers catching and killing the butterflies whenever possible. There are at present several acres under cabbage round Pukekohe Hill. Until quite recent years the white butterfly was unknown for many miles south of Pukekohe. It appears to have reached the Waikato from Hawke’--Bay about three seasons ago. rapidly increasing and spreading still further northward.
