WORK FOR WOMEN

Stage Production Ways in which women have come to the fore in the theatre were discussed recently by Kyrle Bellew, the London actress-theatre owner. “Not so very long ago,” she said to “The Daily Sketch,” “you could seek in vain for a woman scenic designer, presenter, stage manager, or producer. Now, however, there is practically no aspect of the theatre in which women do not play a part. “Everybody knows by this time that we have in Aliss Auriol Lee, to mention only one outstanding personality, an expert producer of plays. “Why is it that women are such a success in the new, and supremely attractive, side of the theatre they have chosen to adopt? “First of all there is (he incontestable feminine eye for detail. I remember once seeing a play, the plfx' of which hinged upon the heroine’s love of luxury. The action took place in a sitting-room which would not have disgraced an Eastern palace. Yet when a communicating door to the boudoir was opened we were confronted by a blank wall! No woman producer would have let this state of affairs go by. “Women, we know, are practically always used for the ‘continuity’ in films. It was a woman who pointed out that a contemporary of Disraeli would not have exclaimed: ‘You leave mo cold !’ “I suppose an avalanche of criticism will fall upon my head if I suggest dual produclion—a man and a woman for each play. I shall bo told about ‘one captain for a ship.’ and so forth. Noverthcloss. I feel that there is something in the idea. I profest that each sex has its great moments, and the production of a play needs the best of both.”
