Health Department’s Attitude COMMENT BY CHAIRMAN Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 19. A letter was received at this afternoon’s meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board from the Director-Gen-eral of Health, Dr. Watt, that restoration of salary reductions should not be made in view of the continued financial stringency and state dthat no increase in the estimates for that purpose would be agreed to. The chairman, Mr. J. K. Hornblow, said he thought that the board had every right to assess the value of its staff. He suggested that the letter should be held over until the estimates were being considered. This .course was agreed to.

WANGANUI JOTTINGS Failure to Clear Ragwort Wanganui, March 19. A fine of £5 was imposed on E. F. Kempthorne py Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., this morning for failing to clear ragwort on his land near the Ruapirau bridge on the Wanganui River Road. Mr. H. Cleland, of the Department of Agriculture, who prosecuted, said that defendant had set a bad example. The Government had spent £lOO clearing the weed in that locality, but defendant had neglected to. Settlers were fighting hard to rid the land, of ragwort. Defendant said that he had been away on holiday and had not received the department’s letter. He had' cleared the weeds since. There was little ragwort on his property, he said. Mr. Salmon: The complaint is that the ragwort is along the road frontages. You will be convicted and fined £5. Wanganui Aero Club. The Wanganui Aero Club has nominated Mies Parkinson to represent it in the landing competition at this week’s North Island air pagtant at Hastings. Mr. J. R. Franklin has been nominated in the bombing, and Mr. M. King in the “all transport” competition.

WEEK-END GOLF Manawatu Club Results Palmerston North, March 19. Fourball and singles handicap competitions were played on the Hokowhitu links over the week-end by members of the Manawatu Golf Club. The fourball was won by J. V. Stevens and J. Hay with a card of 10 up, and the singles by F. Murray with a card of 5 up. ' The following were the best cards:— Fourball: J. V. Stevens and J. Hay, 10 up; F. Murray and H. Swindell, 8 up; E. S. Toogood and A. E. Guy, 8 up; J. P. Stubbs and L. A. Ferguson, 7 up; O. H. Williams and G. McCaskill. 6 up. Singles: F. Murray, 5 up; J. V. Stevens, 4 up; J. P. Stubbs, 4 up. Palmerston North Club. The week-end competitions on the Tc Matai links for members of the Palmerston North Golf Club were flag competitions. The winners were Miss Jepson and L. G. Sinclair. During the week-end there was a playoff for the tic in the previous sveelV«? bogey competition, H. Bott beating B. G. Tremaine. . . The prize for the most improved woman player has been awarded to Mrs. L. G. Sinclair, and the prize for the most improved player in the men’s section has been won by C. Walsh. The season will be officially opened next Saturday.

AMBULANCE SERVICES Comparison of Costs Wanted Palmerston North, March 19. A request for a copy of a report which was placed before the Palmerston North Hospital Board some time ago, aad which gave comparative figures relating to the operations of the board’s ambulance and the Free Ambulance service, was received from the Palmerston North City Council at this afternoon’s meeting of the board. It was decided that as the figures had been submitted to the executive committee and not to the board, the permission of the Free Ambulance should be obtained before the figures were passed on to the City Council. The managing-secretary, Mr. A. J. Phillipps, said that the mileage of the board’s ambulance during the past three years was as follows: 1931-32,1703 miles; 1932- S7Ol miles; eleven months of 1933- 11,951 miles. These figures, be said, revealed a 50 per cent, increase on the last two years when the Free Ambulance had been operating.

MID-WEEK CRICKET Manawatu Fixtures Palmerston North, March 19. The final matches in the Manawatu Cricket Association’s mid-week competition will be played on Wednesday. Optimists and Unemployed A, who arc equal first with 37 points each, are meeting, and- the result of this match will determine the championship winner. The fixtures arc as follow: Unemploy, cd A v. Optimists (m). on No. 1 wicket; Combined Services B (m) v. P.D.C., on No. 2 wicket; Unemployed B (m) v. Combined Services A. on No. 3 wicket.
