AT THE CHESS BOARD
Play-off for Championship CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING Wlum the forty-third tourney to decide the chess championship of the Dominion was held in Dunedin during the Christmas holidays, there was a tie for first Place. Messrs. J. B. Dunlop (Otago C.C.) and A. W. Gyles. Wellington C.C.) each scoring 8J points out of a possible 11. , . , , An extra game was therefore played on January 5, which ended in a draw nt move 79, after nearly seven hours iilav At this stage Mr. Gyles had to leave Dunedin, so it was decided to continue the play-off when Mr. Dunlop was passing through Wellington cn route to Australia. Mr. Dunlop recently purchased a property in Otago Central, and his projected visit to Sydney has been postponed indefinitely. It has therefore been arranged for the two contestants to meet half way, and to continue the play-off in Christchurch ou Easter Saturday. ... ~ . The laws of chess provide for the first move to be taken alternately, and Mr. Gvles will therefore have the first move when play is resumed at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday week in the rooms of the Canterbury'Chess Club. It is interesting to note that when Messrs. Dunlop and Gyles played off their tie in the same room on January 6, 1923, the former won the title. 'Mr- Gyles is naturally hoping for a more favourable outcome in the impending play-off. The Canterbury Chess Club has been asked to appoint an umP Miramar Chess Club. The members of the Miramar Chess Club held their third annual general meeting on Tuesday evening at the Seatoun Kiosk. The annual report showed that the past season had been most successful, the club’s representatives having by their very consistent play won the Wellington league’s B grade shield, for which 10 teams had competed. The balance-sheet showed that the club has just managed to pay its way during the past year. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. W. Hutchings; chairman, Mr. D. Macfarlan; hon. secretary, Mr. A. Walker, Hector Street,. Seatoun; bon. treasurer, Mr. AV. Hutchings; match committee, Messrs. AV. Hutchings, E. Hutchings, and G. AV. AVood; delegate to league, Mr. G. AV. AVood; hon. auditor, Mr. H. N. Robie. Owing to the fact that the club's headquarters are now in Seatoun, and that a number of Seatoun residents are taking part in its activities, it was decided to change the name of the club to the Miramar-Seatoun Chess Club. The annual subscription was fixed nt five shillings, and it was decided to hold the weekly meetings on Tuesdays at the local kiosk. Metcalfe a Chess I’layen
Chess enthusiasts will doubtless be interested to learn that Mr. J. P. Metcalfe, the famous Australian athlete who was in AVcllington recently, is a very capable chess player. The evening before he made his high jump of 6ft. sin. at the last sports meeting on the Basin Reserve he had some interesting games of chess with the local champion, Mr. A. AV. Gyles, at the latter's residence in Knrori. Mr. Metcalfe plays for the Sydney University Chess Club, another member of which is Mr. C. J. S. Purdy, nn ex-champion of New South Wales, and also of New Zealand.
