HAILSTORM DAMAGE

Plight of Canterbury Farmers QUESTION OF ASSISTANCE By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 19. The Government has not yet decided what shall be done to help farmers and fruitgrowers whose crops were damaged by violent hailstorms in January, according to a statement made by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, to-day. An inquiry by the Agricultural Department has not yet been completed, and until that was done the Government could come to no decision. The most that could be done in any case would be to relieve those who were left in such a financial position that they were unable to carry on. The Government had not the finance to help those to whom the loss was not so vitally important, or to act-too liberally. It was not known yet how many were likely to need assistance.
