DEATH FROM BURNS
Inquest on Maori Woman EVIDENCE OF NEGLECT By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wairoa, l9. Giving his verdict that Mrs. Lucy Hohepa, wife of a Maori living at Mahia Peninsula, died from burns caused through a bottle of benzine being spilled over her person and then ignited by a nearby candle, Mr. Winter, district coroner, chastised natives for their neglect and callousness in not securing the services of the district nurse to attend deceased, and then not allowing the nurse to take her to hospital when permission was granted. A number of days elapsed, and by that time the condition of Mrs. Hohepa was very grave, and she succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission to hospital. The coroner also told the natives that if deceased bad died while in their care he would have asked the authorities to prefer a charge of manslaughter against them. This was the second time a similar case occurred in a short period, and should another occur he would ask the authorities to act immediately.
