CAMBRIDGE VICTORY IN BOAT RACE
Both Teams Break Record MEMORABLE CONTES! WON COMFORTABLY By Telegraph-—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received March 18, 6.30 p.m.) London, March 17. Cambridge won the boat race by 41 lengths in IS minutes 3 seconds, a record. Gales and driving rain prevented early arrivals for the race. Officials declared it one of the worst mornings in memory. The start was postponed until the last possible minute. Cambridge won the toss and chose the Surrey station, a severe blow to Oxford. Tlie wind then dropped and tlie water was comparatively smooth. Oxford led as far as Beverley Brook, after which Cambridge was consistently ahead. Oxford, spurting magnificently, got close, but was rowing raggedlv. Cambridge continued to draw away, and passed the post easy winnot showing any signs of distress. The Oxford men were quite played out. ' ... “The Observer” says the race will long be remembered as the most remarkable in the history of the series. Both eights beat the record established by Oxford in 1897, Cambridge by 26 seconds —Oxford by nine. “It is an astonishing result, so astonishing as to make the result a secondary consideration. Oxford can hearten themselves with the thought that, although beaten, they were the most polished and powerful Oxford eight over seen in the race.”
