Shortage of Milk
Sir, —I notice in this mornings issue of "Tlie Dominion,” with reference to the increase in sales of milk by the City Council milk department, that Cr. M, F. Luckie, acting-chairman of the milk committee, has a “dig” at the nearby fanners, to put the council milk department “on-side” with the public. He states that during the past month 10.591 gallons of milk were purchased by 57 nearby farmers, owing to shortage it: their .supplies, but does not state that they are compelled by the City Council to purchase from them instead of other sources. Again, there evidently does not seem to be the “bootlegging” of milk that the council was making a great fuss about.. Some years ago there were nine nearby farmers, to-day there are 90 odd selling milk. There are evidently a great number of people in AVellington who prefer fresh dairy milk. Cr. C. H. Chapman said he presumed that customers did not know they were being supplied by nearby farmers with council milk. He thought the nearby farmers might exnlnin that. I can assure Air. Chapman that customers know without any explaining. It is not a matter of explain but complain.—l am, etc., NEARBY FARMER. AA’ellington. Alarch 16.
