GARDENING AND SORCERY.
A gardener arrested b.v the Java police is alleged to have carried on an extensive practice in sorcery. It appears that, for n consideration he treated affairs of the heart as readily as he agreed to cure physical ills, all cases being dealt with by incantations. He brewed love philtres from fantastic ingredients, told fortunes supplied amulets and lucky charms, and devised magic protection against losses by lire and theft. The sorcerer specialised in the casting out of evil spirits and pronounced formulas guaranteed to make wonderful increases in his clients’ money. Most of the magician's practice was among toe ignorant peasantry. Luck must hav» been with him. for he laid claim to many wonderful achievements.
