ST. PATRICK’S COLLEGE

Archbishop Redwood Looks Back JUBILEE LUNCHEON Fifty years ago on March 16, 1884, his Lordship Bishop Redwood,. Bishop of Wellington, laid the foundation-stone of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. Yesterday as Metropolitan of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand his Grace Archbishop Redwood, S.M., D.D., was the guest of honour at a complimentary luncheon at St. Patrick’s College, and in the afternoon attended the fiftieth annual athletic sports meeting of the college at the Basin Reserve. In proposing the toast of the Archbishop at the luncheon, the Very Rev. Father A. J. Cullen, S.M., B.Sc., rector of St. Patrick’s College, recalled the day when Archbishop Redwood had initiated the college, and expressed the pleasure of the college thqt he was presiding at the table that day. His vision and his wise direction had brought the college into being, and because of that, he said, they were very glad to welcome him that day. In reply, Archbishop Redwood said he was pleased to receive such a salutation of joy as that tendered him. “The fifty years that have passed seem to be a very short period,” said his Grace. He well remembered the fine day they had 50 years ago. He had made a lot of prophecies about the college then, and they had come true—more than true. He himself was the first vocation to the priesthood from New Zealand, and had ordained more than a hundred priests from St. Patrick’s College. “That is a very great record for the college,” he said. The luncheon was a complimentary one given to representatives of various athletic bodies in the city and to the Press of Wellington in appreciation of services rendered the college during the 50 years of its life. The guests included: Archbishop O’Shea, S.M., D.D., Mons. T. Connolly, V.F., Very Rev. Dr. D. Kennedy, S.M., provincial of the Marist Fathers, Very Rev. Father J.
