Last Evening’s Meeting GENERAL BUSINESS A meeting o£ the Wellington City Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, presided, and there were also present Crs, P. M, Butler, T. Brindle, C. H. Chapman, R. MeKeen, W. Appleton, M. F. Luckie, IL A, Huggins, J. Burns, T. Forsyth, W. Duncan, and W. J. Gaudin. Improvements are to be made to the lighting of Mersey Street East and at the junction of Bengal and Wliitu Streets. »Jt « * Approval was given to the action of the city valuer in arranging a lease of tramway property at the corner of Moxliani Avenue and the tunnel approach road. # * « It was decided that the sale of the special tramway concession tickets for use on the overlapping section between Thorndon station and Johnston Street be-contiuued for a further three months, commencing April 1. For a period of twelve months from April 1, disabled soldiers from the Returned Soldiers’ Hostel who travel daily to the hospital for treatment are to be supplied with tramway concession tickets at half cost, subject to the total cost to the council not exceeding £l2/10/-. In connection with the new working conditions for linesmen, Messrs. M. Cable, G. Lauchlan, and F. Good were appointed to act as the council’s assessors with a representative of the Employers’ Association acting in the capacity of agent. « ♦ ♦ Arrangements have been made for a series of lantern lectures ou astronomy to be given in the Concert Chamber on suitable evenings during the winter months. .

Cr. M. F. Luckie has been elected chairman of the observatory committee.

It was decided, to prohibit car parking on the south side of Aro Street between Willis Street and Ohiro Road.

A private way off Broadway, Miramar, was authorised subject to compliance with all conditions laid down by the city engineer.

It was decided to take no action in regard to the formation of a paddling pool at Karori Park, estimated to cost £5OO.

The offer of the Wadestown Children’s Playground Society to donate £45 toward the cost of erecting a sheltershed at the Wadestown play area was accepted with thanks, and the director of parks was authorised to put the work in hand.

The city engineer was instructed to prepare plans and estimates for the erection of a larger hangar at the Rongotai aerodrome.

The proposals submitted by the Fishermen’s Association, Island Bay, for the construction of a fish landing stage on the eastern rocks at Island Bay, and which the reserves committee recommended for approval, were referred back to the committee to consult with the Marine Department and the Harbour Board with the object of coming to some decision as to where to establish a fishermen’s wharf.

A renewal of the lease of portion of the pavilion at the Basin Reserve for a further twelve months to the present lessee on existing terms, was. granted.

It was decitled to take no objection to the Crown exercising its rights under the Botanical Gardens Vesting Act, 1891, to acquire six acres at the Botanical Gardens for observatory purposes. •* * *

The reserves, public gardens, baths and beaches committee reported that a deputation had been received from croquet players urging the formation or croquet courts on the Lyall Bay recreation reserve, and that the matter was receiving its attention.

The council refused an application for permission to lease a part of the road reserve at Branda Pass for the formation of tennis courts. It was decided to construct a footpath at Belvedere Road, at an estimated cost of £5O, as soon as funds permit, and that arrangements be made for the bluff at the corner of Belvedere and Evans Bay roads to be cut back by relief labour.

In order to avoid the expense of setting up a commission to apportion the maintenance costs of the Hutt River and Waiwetu stream pipe bridges between the local bodies concerned, approval was given to the proportions being fixed by traffic tallies to be taken at the bridge approaches on three days —a Friday, a race day, and a Sunday •—from which the yearly traffic is to be computed.

Messrs. J. Suckling and C. Hood were appointed to continue to act as temporary traffic inspectors til] June 30.

Dispensation was granted from full compliance with the by-law in connection with the visit of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in order that, the following landing fees may be charged at Rongotai aerodrome: Southern Cross, 10/- per landing: WafckettCodoek monoplane, 5/* per landing.
