ROYAL ARTIST Wins Ohinemuri Cup KING FORD’S SPRINT Totalisator Decrease Dominion Special Service. Paei'oa, March 15. Delightful weather favoured the opening of the Ohinemuri Jockey Chib s meeting at Paeroa to-day. lhe course was very fast. . Koval Artist showed a return to At inning form in accounting for the Ohinemuri Cup, and King Ford did likewise in taking the Paeroa Handicap. The totalisator investments were ilo,251/10/-, against £20,498/10/- last year, a decrease of £7247. Favourite Wins Easily. On the strength of the promise she had shown in her two previous races over hurdles, Vai Watch was an each-way favourite for the Handicap Hurdles, and she won easily. . • • „ She reached the front after the first fence and carried the held alon„ until joined by Brown Abbey about. five furlongs from home.. they then went ri’ht away from the field, and Vai Wateh drew away in the straight, to witi by five lengths from Brown Abbey. • Lian Ronald plodded on to get third, and London wag fourth. . . .. Vai Watch is a most promising recruit to the jumping brigade and would have won races on the flat only for het . tiousness getting her placed on tj'e carrier schooling list. She is a to Day Guard, who raced with a deal of success a few seasons a p o. 11® Air was very sore, and after tailing right iff early ran off at the second fence. ' Hollow Victory. Namakia was a hot favourite in a field of four for the Karangahake Han ditcap, and she. won with the greatest Ca Namakia was first away from the outside, and, after letting Gay Athlone run up on the inside of her at the end of the first furlong, went away before reaching the home turn to. win hands down ■from Goy.Athlone, ’'Y 110 Tiit bv two lengths, with. Gay bister last. The ease with which Namakia won made the others look very moderate.

However, Keith Lu is not thoroughly fit and may improve. Led AU the Way. The three-year-old Bally Money opened his winning account with a narrow win in the Await! Handicap, for jh ch Foreign Money and Sir Vai were tLe ra Bally Money led all the way and won bv half a head from Queen Nona, who defeated Sir Vai by a similar mar " l “ v Calcutta was fourth, followed by Anbretia and Foreign Money. Bally Money has plenty ot speed, and is improving with racing. Queen Not a might have just won it she had « ot very wide round the home I ’’ l u • vv'>e«Foreign Money also lost ground. Sir Val finished on, but. had a hne run on the rails, as also did Au'bretia, who failed n the last half-furlong, after looking likely up till then. Gypsy Moth bolted just before the start, and, crashing through a fence, took no part in the race. A Tight Finish. There was a great finish, in the Ohinemuri Cup, a.nd Royal Artist, third fancy on both machines, scored narrowly. Trishna and Prolyxo made the running from Knight of Australia and Baroscope, who were together, followed by Kojal Artist, with Master Brierly well back. The pace was slow along the back, and Baroscope dashed to the front near the three furlongs, to lead into the straight from Prolyxo, Royal Artist, and Chief Cook. Roval Artist finished well to score bv a head from Baroscope, who beat the fast-finishing Master Brierly by half a neck; Knight of Australia was fourth, and Chief Cook fifth. Roval Artist’s victory was overdue, as he' had not wou for over twelve months. Wiggins attempted to steal the race on Baroscope, and nearly succeeded. Master Brierly finished at a great rate on the outside, and his performance was good Knight of Australia got pocketed on the rails at a critical stage, and had* Ins chance materially affected. Helped by Rider. Keen horsemanship on the part of R. McTavish in dashing to the front about three furlongs from home proved a big factor in the victory of Gay Broney in the Netherton Handicap. Gay Broney was in the rear at the five furlongs, but when the leaders were not travelling fast. McTavish made a sharp run which enabled Gay Broney to have a lead of three lengths at the turn, and win bv a neck from Ornamental, who finished strongly, and was gaining at every stride. Last Lap was third, and Gigantic fourth. Ornamental appeared unlucky to lose and her turn should come very soon. Return to Form. Star Artist was an each-way favourite for the Paeroa Handicap, but she failed to show her best form and missed a place. , King Ford ran to the front quickly and led throughout to win by a length from British Columbia, who finished on after getting cut back early. Lucidus was half a head away third and Exaggeration came from last to get fourth. Exaggeration was also cut back early, otherwise she would have been closer. King Ford had not won for some time, but he was well supported on account of the good work he has been doing since returning to the care of his old trainer, J F. Tutchen, a short time ago. Britisli Columbia should be benefited by the race. All-the-Way Steeple Win. Mangu King, third favourite on the win machine and first choice in the place betting, led all the way to win the McGuire Steeplechase from the win favourite, Simeon. Zane Grey moved up to Mangu King about half a mile from home, where Simeon, Biform and Wiltshire were also handy. There was little between Mangu King, Zane Grey and Simeon at the last fence, but Mangu King was first over and went on to beat Simeon by three lengths. Zane was two lengths back third, and Biform was a creditable fourth. Mangu King was better conditioned than most of the field and was also assisted by his good jumping. Biform should be improved by the race, and looks like making a useful steeplechaser. Vaipeen was much, above himself and tircu

after being prominent for about two miles. . . Scored Decisively.

Wait and See was an each-way favourite for the Koniata. Huck Handicap, and she scored very decisively. Moonfleet was first away, but Expectance soon ran to the lead from the extreme outside with Wait and See just inside her on the fence and Grand City next. Wait and See and Expectancy were the.leaders into the straight, closely attended by Grand City, Roman Mascot and Kanapa. Wait and See drew away in the straight to win easily by three lengths from the consistent Roman Mascot. Grand City was fourth, followed bv Kanapa and Bonny Gay, who did not 'begin well. Wait and See is improved and gave nothing a chance at the HANDICAP HURDLES, of £l5O. One mile and a half. 1/1 VAL WATCH. fl.O (It. IS. Thompson) 1 2/2 BROWN ABBEY, 9AO ..
