PERMISSION REFUSED

Good Friday Pictures A short discussion on the question of allowing picture theatres to open on Good Friday took place at the meeting of the Wellington City Council hist evening, when applications from several theatres were not granted. In moving that no permission be granted, the Mayor, Mr. T. C A. Hislop. said that' permission had been granted before for pictures on Christinas Day. but never on Good Friday. Cr. T. Brindle said he did not see why pictures should not be allowed on Good Friday if people wanted them. There was no reason why the council should prevent them, he said. He took it that the theatres generally had select programmes on such days, and there was no compulsion on anybody to go. There was nothing detrimental to the community in it. The Mayor said lie did not think it was desirable to offend the susceptibilities of many people by allowing pictures on Good Friday. ’rhe motion was carried. Permission was granted for a sacred Good Friday concert in tiie Town Hall.
