NEW LINER PLANNED Melbourne Steamship Co. The improved conditions in Australian affairs, combrued with the low level of shipbuilding prices in the United Kingdom, recently caused the directors of the Melbourne Steamship Company, Limited, to proceed seriously with consideration of the construction of a fast 10,000-ton passenger and cargo liner for the interstate trade. At the half-yearly meeting of shareholders, Mr. D. Y. Syme, chairman of directors, said preliminary negotiations with shipbuilders had resulted in favourable quotations being submitted. The venture would represent a big step forward for the company, and would absorb most, if not all, of its liquid funds, which for some time had been earning only a low rate of interest. The directors felt that prospects justified the proposed step. The public was showing an increasing appetite for sea travel, and the directors felt confident that the attraction of a large and modern liner, equipped with the latest devices for both comfort and safety, would bring a satisfactory response. The design of the new vessel provided for nmpla accommodation for all the cargo that it was likely to be called upon to handle, PORT PIRIE REPORTS.
