AT A GOOD PRICE Aga Khan’s Waikato Win JUMPERS PREPARING Horses Coming to Trenthani (By “Boneke.”) ; Prior to being sent to Te Rapa lor -the Waikato meeting, Aga Klutu had galloped well, beating his stable-mate. Diagano, over half a mile run in 49 4-5. Aga Khan was not in high favour, due to failures at To ArOha, and returned his supporters a substantial dividend. Jumpers at Hawera. Stanchion 'is improving ■as a jumper,: and his recent form in his_ schooling at. Ilawera gives hope of his making good as a hurdler. The steeplechaser, - Copey, is very gay, and still outjumps any horse he schools! with. : 1 Hitlers for To-day. Riding engagements for the Dannevirke meeting inelude: L. H. Jones, Puree;. A. W. Broughton, Chopin, Good . Hunting, Sanguine King, Palm, Bon Rapide. Golden Hah - . The crack filly Golden Hair galloped well on Saturday, sprinting five furlongs at Hawera on the trial grass track in 1.1 4-5. She may start in the Thompson Handicap in prcference'to the Railway Handicap at Trenthani. Her grand-dam, Helen Portland, won the Thompson Handicap in 1907, and Reremoana, a grandson of Helen Portland, won in 1925 and again in 1927. Carfex for Ellerslie.
After returning to Hawera from Te Aroha, Carfex was physicked, and his injured foot treated. He was out doing light exercise on Saturday, aud is likely to race at Ellerslie at Easter. To Launch Out.
F. Smith, who was- private trainer for Mr. T. Impey for the last three years, has decided to set up as a public trainer at Takanini. He will remain in his old quarters. During the period he trained for Mr. Impey. Smith’s charges won approximately £5300, a good record with a team that -was not strong, and he is not likely to lack support in his new capacity. Manefho.
Manetho, who had to drop out of his engagement at Motukarara on Saturday on account of trouble in one of his tendons, is to remain at Riccarton. On veterinary advice, F. Christmas will keep him in regular exercise on the lead, but he will not be ridden. This treatment will be continued for two months, at the end of which time it is hoped that he will be able to resume regular track work.
Neil Resumes. After a period of inactivity, the jumper Neil is back on the tracks at Ellerslie. Neii performed well in jumping events last year, and should again perform solidly when he returns to racing condition.
Stays Well. ,' A. D. Adams, who was located at Mat’.mata for some weeks, has returned to Ellerslie with Ornamental, who is looking •nil the better for her recent racing. Ornamental did not have the best of luck when she finished fourth at Pukekohe last Saturday, and she may show improved form in her next few starts. She stays rather well, and may always do best over middle distances.
Trip Cancelled. Tcuit le Monde was to have come north *ext week to compete in the Champion Hack Cup at Trentham, but he did not run well enough at Motukarara to enesurage optimism, and the trip has been enttcelled. In spite of Saturday’s failure, for which interference offered some excuse, Tout 1c Monde is coming along nicely in his preparation, and a win may be expected later in the season.
Not Coming. Ifaere Tonu will not make the (rip to Trenthani next week. He has been working well since he resumed work, but he may not -be forward enough to show his best form for some time.
Riding Engagements. A. H. Eastwood is assured of some good rides at Trentham next week. His engagements. so far, for the first day. include Copyist, Silly Owl, Scarlet Rambler, Pomp, and Rebel Star. Will Be at Trentham.
Royal Amphora is none the worse for his race at Motukarara on Saturday. He will be taken to Trentham next week, and he should race well in hack sprints, despite the fact that he is getting up in the weights. A Bad Record.
Shatter gave a disappointing display In the Peninsula Cup at Motukarara. He was well placed early, but he shaped poorly over the last two furlongs. finishing a long way back. As a result R. T>. .Tones has decided not to send him to Trentham next week. Shatter has a bad record this season. Tn spite, of excellent track work he has not won a race, and though he has been placed a few times, some of hi's worst performances have been regirtered when he looked most like showing his best form.
Silver Ring's 'Programme, Silver Ring has gone on well since ho contracted, his slight trouble on the ere nf the Canterbury Toekev Club's summer meeting last month, and has done some attractive work during the last two weeks. as ho id engaged in-the North Island Challenge Stakes, and also in the Awapuni Cup the following week, he may not tackle the difficult mile handicap. A decision on the matter will be made' later in the week. Brush Stecplccliasing. The innovation of .brush steeplechases at Riccarton has encouraged several owners to consider the advisability of trying their horses, as-jumpers.. and indications point to the fields for the two events on the autumn programme -being well patronised. A schooling, fence has been erected near the top of the straight, and three horses, Rational 11, The Bailiff," and Fleeting Glance, were educated- over.it during tho past few days, all acquitting themselves satisfactorily. Australian Cup. Peter Jackson is to make his first appearance at -the Melbourne carnival in the Australian Cup on Saturday, and is to be ridden by A. E. Ellis. It will be remembered that Peter Jackson ran a good race in the Melbourne 'Cup under 8.5. 41b. less than he has to carry on Saturday, and as the field he will encounter must be considered fairly weak as stayers go, he is entitled to be included among the promising candidates. The last five races for the Australian Cup have been won by horses whose weight ranged from 7.8 to 7.3. and Sea Money, 6.10, who has been recently winning hurdle and jumpers’ flat races in Tasmania, was the last successful, with less than seven stone. Expectancy Sold. Before sailing on his return to England by the Aorangi, Major P: KerrSmiley effected the purchase of Expectancy, who is to remain under the care of F. Smith at Takanini. Expectancy is a three-year-old filly by Luculius from the Comedy King mare Presumption, and she has previously carried the colours of her breeder, Mr. T, Impey, who has retired from racing. Expectancy had her last start when she finished second to Solo Song in the Buckland Hack Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday. Major Kerr-Smiley resides in England, but he has previously had a horse racing in New Zealand, and one of his horses is Persian, who is at present trained at Randwick by J. T. Jamieson. Freshened. After being on the easy list since racing unsuccessfully at the Wellington meeting in January, Lord Vai has made a reappearance on the tracks nt Ellerslie, and he has been out trotting in the middle during the past couple of days. Lord Vai lightened up considerably after his southern trip, but he has freshened up a good deal, and should come into his own when the tracks are heavy later in the season. Hawke’s Buy Nominations. WAIKATO RACING Aga Khan’s Memorial SPRINT TO GAY SHEILA Suspension of a Jockey Dominion Special Service. Hamilton, Marell S. Keen racing featured the opening of the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa to-day, when the course was fast. Most of the winners were well supported, although Aga Khan and Coronis both paid good win dividends. Aga Khan led practically all the way to win the Storey Memorial Handicap, and the three-year-old filly Gay Sheila scored narrowly in the sprint. The totalisator investments were £14.787/10/-. compared with £14,648 10/- on the first day last year. Promising Thrce-yaar-olld. The three-year-old Mungacre was an each-way favourite for the Trial Stakes, and he realised expectations by winning throughout from Englishman, who was always second when the field settled down. Etcetera came from a good way back with a solid run to just cut Campanero out of third, and the closest of the others were Curlew, Arawa Rose and Wynne’s Delight. Mungacre is a half-brother to Transformer. He is a good sort, who will win in better company. Arawa Rose and Etcetera were both closer at the finish than at any other stage, the latter finishing really well. Riotous Wins Hurdles. Riotous, second fancy on both machines. scored in the Frankton Hurdles from the place favourite, Cruachan. Vai Watch made most of the running, and was joined nearing the turn by Uuoeo, who led into the straight from Riotous and Vai Watch. Riotous was first over the gap in the last fence which Stanchion had lowered when he fell in the first round, aud at this stage Uuoeo. Vai Watch, and Cruachan were all handy. Riotous stayed on to win all out from Cruachan, who defeated Vai Watch by three parts of a length. Simeon was fourth and Uuoeo fifth. Tlakanou fell at the fence near the" six furlongs post. The favourite, Brown Abbey, lost ground in the final stages to finish well back. Wan Decisively. Showing improvement upon her running' at Te .Aroha, Namakia, second favourite each way to Royal Appellant, scored very decisively in the Juvenile Ilandi-' cap. She got to tlie front quickly from au outside position, and won by. two lengths and a half from Royal Appellant, who ran his usual honest race in spite of ibo fact that lie appeared sore. Lionheart, after running very wide round the turn, was a fair third, and Waitaka ran on 'to get fourth ahead of Lifeguard and Keith Lu, both of whom should improve. Namakia.is a nice filly, who should do still better. Aga Khan All the Way. Aga Khan brought off a mild surprise in winning the Storey 'Memorial Handicap, although he was a good fourth fancy. Aga Khan and Mungatoon made all the; running, ami they were the leaders into the.straight from. Royal Artist and KingMarch, with Knight of Australia on the rails and Master Brierly on the outside. Aga Khan was in front at the and stayed on to-win. from Knight.of Australia, who finished fast on the outside after failing to get a run on the inside. Royal Artist was a fair third, jtnd Mungatoon was fourth, ahead, of King March,; Master' Brierly, and Beryl Latour. ■Aga Khan registered a nice perform-, anco, hut would have had a much more .difficult task if Knight .of Australia had got clear sooner. Royal Artist showed further signs of regaining form, but Ma.s-, ter Brierly and King March both disappointed. A Close Finish. There was a great finish in the Linley Hack Handicap, and the moderatelyfancied Coronis just prevailed from Roman Mascot. After Adeline and Prince Acre had made the running. Coronis. Roman Mascot. and Solarium were almost abreast with a furlong to go. Coronis stayed on best to win by a nose from Roman Mascot, who defeated Solarium by three-parts.of a length. Adeline was a close fourth, with King Musk and'Phiakuo right up. Solarium made a big run on the outside round the turn, otherwise he would have been closer. King 'Musk went a good race, and should be improved by the run. Oriel was never sighted until near tho finish, where he was running on in seventh position. K. Voitre. who had ridden tho two previous winners, just failed to complete the hat trick, when he was narrowly beaten on Prolyxo in the Puketaha GTighweight Handican. King Win attended to the pacemaking and led into the straight from Prolyxo and Liniex. who joined him in ihe lead with a furlong to go. Tn a tine race home Limex won by a head from Prolyxo, who defeated the fast-finishing Tualieahe by a length. King Win tired into fourth position. and Jalldy Karo was running on fifth. It was a fine tussle between the first aud second, and Limex just. won. Tuaheahe came fast from a good way back. Hard Finish in Sprint. Gay Sheila was responsible for a nice nerformance in winning the President's Handicap. She followed Bouglial and Sinking Fund into the straight, and in a hard finish won by half a head from Sinking Fund, who fought on splendidly. Lucidus finished on to get third, and Bouglial was fourth, after being in front to the distance. L’Allcgro had his chance extinguished, being hopelessly left, and just followed round behind the field. Diagano was one of the first to begin, but was interfered with early and sent back to a homeless position. He was running on at the end. but had 1 too much ground to make up to be dangerous. Favourites Run Dead-beat. . The favourites, Saltspray and D’Artagnan. ran a dead-heat for first in the' Beerescourt Hack Handicap. Teels led into the straight clear of Snltsprny and Miss Lulu, who were just clear of Don’t Lap and D'Artagnan. Saltspray was in front inside the distance, but D'Artagnan finished fast and got on to make a dead-beat. Teels was a fair third, and Miss Lulu was fourth. D'Artagnan responded in great style when his rider drew the whip about a hundred yards from Iho post, and would Probably have won outright in another few .strides. G. Cameron, rider of Lucidns in the President’s Handicap, was suspended or a fortnight for interference with Diagano. Details of the Racing TRIAL STAKES, of £lOO. Six furlongs. 1/1 MUNG ACRE. 7.12 (S. GAINE CARRINGTON Goes Amiss When Back to Best Form ’ Jim I’ike'expressed the opinion after the Williamstown Stakes early in February that had Gaine Carrington remained sound he. would have been the star performer of the autumn campaign. He said he had never previously known a horse to improve to such an extent in tli£_2pace of a few months. Not only had Gaine. Carrington made progress in appearance, but he raced more kindly, keeping a straight course, in his last race. It is most unfortunate that Gaine Canrineton should go amiss' just when be was back to his best form. The trouble is in the suspertsory ligament.-and after the Stakes the. horse was decidedly lame. Such /in ailment always is serious, but recoveries from it have been effected, and it is hoped that Gaine Carrington will come up for the spring.. In describing a breakdown of the suspensory ligament a prominent trainer explained that it was similar to the breaking of a mainspring of a watch. The whole works were ruined. Even if apparent recoveries are made in such cases there always is the weakness, which, when strain is put on the leg, is likely to make its presence felt'. After the race Mr. J. Phillips decided not to persevere with Gaine Carrington, who in a few weeks will be turned out for a long spell. He will be brought up in time for an attempt to be made to get him rjyidy for spring engagements. Having won two good races this autumn. Gaine Carrington struck form earlier than was expected. In the Williamtown Stakes he went to the front at the start and led all the way. A later report says:—Mr. S. O. Wood, the veterinary surgeon, who has been treating Gaine Carrington, says ' that there is a definite improvement in the Caulfield Cup winner's condition. Mr. Wood diagnosed the trouble as a- sprain of the suspensory ligament., and seems to think that there is reason to hope that Gaine Carrington will recover if treated to a spell (says an Australian writer). Most high-class performers have a groom sent with them nowadays when they go away for a spell, and probably this course will be adopted with Gaine Carrington, whose form suggests that he is a horse worth the trouble and expense of a special attendant while spelling.
