CHRISTMAS LAW-BREAKERS
Mince Pie “Idolations”
Did you know that, legally, a mince pie is an “idolatrous” thing? A “bar-rister-at-law,” writing in a London newspaper, has delved into our Christmas laws for the last 400 years, and has unearthed some astonishing things. He assures us that according to the statute books Christmas revellers are liable to legal punishment if they : Eat more than three courses at their Christmas dinner;
Indulge in “boisterous or unseemly laughter”; Make or eat, or “be concerned in making or consuming” a mince pie—for it is an “abominable and idolatrous thing”; Play “games.” I can assure you that there were about 40,000,000 law-breakers in England this Christmas, but then you all know what the law is.—Reuter—Special to “The Dominion.”
