HOMES OF COMPASSION

Successful Street Day Wellington's most perfect summer day so far had surely been reserved for the Street Day Appeal for the Homes of Compassion yesterday, and judging by the number of collectors and the fourteen wonderfully stocked stalls, the organisation seemed to be flawless. The objects of the appeal are the maintenance of the two Homes of Compassion, at Island Bay and at Silverstream, where a new home was opened recently, and the upkeep of the Buckle Street Relief Depot. This depot was started one winter as a soup kitchen in conjunction with the home, and has been carried on by the Sisters of Compassion although the Buckle Street home has been moved to the new building at Silverstream. Everywhere one went smiling collectors, with their blue badges and jingling grey boxes were in evidence. There were three hundred boxes out in the city and suburbs and a peep into the depot in Boulcott Stree_t showed a hive of workers opening them and counting the money—a pleasant sound in so worthy a cause. Five o’clock came and young men from offices took up their stand with boxes to relieve tne girls who had worked hard all day. The stalls were most temptingly arranged with cakes, jams, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and fancy goods. ‘•They have everything from beetroot to bath-salts,” was a remark heard, which summed up their attractiveness in an intriguing manner. As the sun was so very hot. some thoughtful stallholders had' protected their wares with big §pn umbrellas, whose gay stripes gave the stalls a most dashing appearance. Those in charge of the stalls were :— At the War Memorial: Mesdames Bolton, Crombie, Hickmott and helpers. Kirkcaldie and Stains: Mesdames Gleeson, Ryland, Fitzgibbons and Dooley.
