STREET WIDENING
Counsel’s Commitments The executive of the Wellington Ratepayers’ Association on Monday night discussed the City Council’s intention to apply to the Loans Board for a loan of £24,000 to meet commitments made in connection with various street widening schemes, and the following resolution was carried: — “That a sub-committee prepare a statement for submission to the Loans Board setting out the city’s position relative to the various schemes for street widening, and showing (a) the money already borrowed, (b) the properties acquired, '(c) die cost to the city of holding such property, (d) the. rates lost to the city by the change from private ownership, and (e) nn estimate of the contingent liability resting upon the city under the existing building line by-law scheme for street widening.
"And that the association reaffirms its contention that if the building line bylaw scheme is to be continued the -ouncil should at once commence setting aside annually some portion of the city’s revenue so that a fund may be built up in anticipation of calls which will year by year be made upon the city's finances as ttje scheme materialises, for under this by-law scheme alone the contingent liability to the city must, run into some hundreds of thousands. Over 16 streets are affected, so it is evident that in any one yrar a considerable sum may have to be found, and ns stated such a contingency should be provided for in advance rather than that.il haphazard method should be resorted to of perpetually raising loann without, the sanction of ratepayers.”
