NITRATE SHIPMENTS
Ships Chartered For Unnamed Port WASHINGTON CONCERN Supplies Presumed to be For Munitions By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received January 30, 7.5 p.m.) Washington, January 29. The “Washington Post” understands that high Administration officials are concerned regarding the sudden chartering by unidentified persons of about ■a dozen vessels to load nitrates in Chile ■for delivery at am unnamed port. The nitrates are presumably bound for Russia and Japan for use in the manufacture of munitions. The “Post” adds: “There is only one explanation to this sudden chartering of so many vessels to load nitrates. That is that both Japan and Russia are planning the intensive manufacture of war munitions.” REFERENCE TO JAPAN U.S. Official’s Reply to AntiWar Delegation (Received January 30. 7.15 p.m.) 'Washington, January 29. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. H, T. Rainey, to-day received a delegation of anti-war advocates requesting the defeat of the Vinson Naval Bill, and the curtailment of appropriations for military reserves. Replying, Mr. Rainey expressed the .hope “that there would be no war between Japan and Russia this spring,” .but added: “The disbanding of outarmy and navy and the turning over of the Civilian Conservation Corps to civilian management would greatly encourage Japan in her moves toward Russia.” Mr. Rainey indicated that he will not defer consideration of the Vinson Bill, for which an early passage is expected.
