VISIT TO SOUNDS

Wanganella’s Departure FIRST SUMMER CRUISE A typical holiday spirit was shown by those on board the Wanganella last night when a successful start was made from Wellington on the first of this summer’s cruises to the West Coast sounds. Those in charge expressed themselves as being satisfied with the support given to this cruise, in view of the proximity of, Christmas, and consider it a good omen, for the Bay of Islands’ trip which is to take place in January. Leaving Pipitea Wharf at 6.10 p.m., the Wanganella moved out into the stream and anchored while a dance was held on board. About 11 p.m, she weighed anchor and proceeded to sea. As the vessel is going down the West Coast to-day a description of the towns and sights will be broadcast throughout the ship from the bridge. Sports, including a cricket match, will be held during the day, and from 8.15 p.m. to 10 p.m. passengers will be entertained with a talkie programme. Dancing on the gaily decorated promenade deck will follow until 11.30 p.m. To-morrow the vessel is set down to arrive at George Sound, where she wid remain for two hours before coming back to Milford Sound. There between six and eight Wellington passengers will be landed by launch to enable them to walk over the Milford track to Pembroke. Later they will proceed to Dunedin. At 8.30 p.m. aboard the ship there will be an illustrated lecture on New South' Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, after which community singing and dancing will take place. Race Meeting Arranged. On Thursday the playing of deck games will be continued. At 2.45 p.m. the Wanganella Cup race meeting will be held. In this miniature horses mounted on wheels and drawn by strings will be used. The men passengers will be asked to nominate a horse, pay an entrance fee and find a jockey, who must be selected from one of the lady passengers. The part to be played by the jockeys will be to wind-up the string attached to the various horses. The race is to have five horses in each heat, of which there will be four. To the winner a handsome cup will be presented. Later a winning owners’ race will be held among the men, and in this case the winner will also receive a cup. At 8 p.m. the vessel will anchor in Ship’s Cove, Queen .Charlotte Sound, and there a fancy dress dinner and ball will be held. Prizes have been provided for both the man and the lady wearing the most original and the most comical dress. ;Early on Friday the vessel will sail again for Wellington, arriving here in the morning.
